twentysix in Dartmouth - what a find!

People MUST try new restaurant twentysix in Lower Street! This is what our lovely guests who stayed last night told us when they left this morning - they'd strolled for two minutes down the road from our door, discovered twentysix and had a fantastic meal there, and they just wanted me to let people know about it. So I am..!

We had some brilliant food there on the opening night and hear they may now have some special offers on - check out their website and give them a try.

We're sure you won't regret it. And no, Denise and Richard aren't paying me to say this - we just really like the place.

Bon Appetit...

Monday 6 August 2012

People say the sweetest things - thank you!

Want to know one of the things we like best about running a guest house? It's got to be meeting a huge variety of nice people not just from the length and breadth of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales but from all over the place. We've had guests from Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Spain, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Denmark - to name but a few.

Not only is it extremely interesting, but what really does our poor old hearts good on a grey rainy day when nothing seems to be going right is the compliments we get when they leave, or the lovely comments they write in our Visitors' Book, or the great reviews they give us on TripAdvisor

Call us old fashioned, but it still gives us a little warm glow to know that our guests like what we're doing! Thank you kind people - we really appreciate it.

Agatha Christie's house at Greenway, near Dartmouth

Agatha Christie

If you've never visited Agatha Christie's house at Greenway, just five miles up the river from Dartmouth, you're in for a treat. As well as the famous author's beautifully refurbished home you can stroll around the gardens and enjoy spectacular views all down the river Dart, and round it all off with a nice cuppa tea and a sit down (or much more, if the fancy takes you...).

Greenway House

You can make a day of it by taking a leisurely half hour river trip either on the Greenway Ferry, which goes from the Dartmouth Pontoon and stops right on Greenway Quay, or the Dittisham Ferry from Dartmouth Embankment, which stops at Dittisham on the opposite bank to Greenway. If you take the Dittisham option you'll need to ring a bell outside the pub on the quay to summon the small ferry from the other side, which only takes a few minutes.

The food at Greenway is lovely, with the choice of the Barn Gallery Cafe, House Kitchen or Greenway Dining Room (see website link for full details) but if you wanted to have lunch at Dittisham we can recommend the Ferry Boat Inn and the Anchorstone Cafe on the quay - spoilt for choice, really!

And the good news is, both the Greenway Ferry and the Dittisham Ferry are less than five minute's walk from The Crow's Nest's front door - so you can have a relaxing night's sleep, take a leisurely breakfast, stroll along to buy your ferry tickets and start relaxing right away.

So - can we tempt you to stay at
The Crow's Nest...? Just give us a call.

A bat...

Did you know that you can go bat watching at Slapton every Wednesday at dusk, from now until August 29th? No? Well, just visit the AONB website for full details or click on the bat watching link above.

See, this is what we love about the South Hams - there's always something interesting going on!

Oh, and if you're feeling hungry after all that batty behaviour, we can recommend the Start Bay Inn at nearby Torcross (at the end of Slapton Sands) - they serve Fabulous. Fantastic Fresh Fish, but beware: the 'jumbo' options are not for the faint-hearted...

And as an added bonus, we are only fifteen minutes from Slapton by car - can we tempt you..??

Cloud Dreaming in Dartmouth

Yesterday, as the early evening sun was streaming through the front window of The Crow's Nest, I found myself gazing out of the window and dreaming while I was waiting for the vegetables to steam. I had five minutes to spare - the table was laid, the cottage pie was in the oven, and I didn't have time to start doing anything 'useful' so I simply sat and watched a whole intriguing bunch of clouds - some wispy, some big and cotton-woolly - racing rapidly across the blue, blue sky above sunlit Jawbones Hill (the view from our front window, and indeed from our guest room above it). I don't usually do this - being the industrious type - and felt quite pleasantly mesmerised and relaxed for a few precious minutes.

See, this is what I love about being in Dartmouth - you can pause in your every day business and appreciate again and again just how lucky you are to be in such a unique and magical place. And appreciate we do, believe me.

I was just hoping that our lovely guests in Cabin Two were enjoying the same inspiring view when the buzzer screamed imperiously and I came back to earth with a jolt - but I still cherished a little relaxing warm glow as I dished out the dinner and left the clouds to get on with their own business.

Thank you Dartmouth - once again. xxx

PS I tried to find a photo of Jawbones Hill to share with you without success - sorry. Anyone have a good one to share?
