Christmas events at Coleton Fishacre

'Trust' Coleton Fishacre to come up with some fabulous events for Christmas.

If you've never visited, it's a lovely National Trust property a couple of miles from Kingswear, which describes itself as 'A luxuriant garden by the sea, with an Arts and Crafts-style house, featuring Art Deco-influenced interiors'.

Visit the Coleton Fishacre website for details of opening times, prices etc, not to mention some of their Christmas events which are always brilliant.

Here are just some of the delights on offer:

Twelve days of Christmas
The house will be full of 1920s decorations and the doors will be open from 27 - 31 December, 11am - 4pm... for free!

Celebrate some of the 12 days in style with us, without paying a penny to enter. Discover a 1920s Christmas with a twist, enjoy seasonal treats in the café, and walk off the Christmas excesses in the garden.

Christmas shopping

The National trust Shop is stocked to the brim with festive treats for your someone special. Pick up gifts, Christmas food, and much more.
Open Saturdays, Sundays and Mondays throughout December - why not make a day of it?

And not forgetting of course that Father Christmas is coming..!

He's making a list, checking it twice...

Saturday 8, 15 and 22 December, 2 - 4pm
For three spectacular Saturdays in December the library will be transformed into Father Christmas' grotto. Meet Father Christmas, bring along your letters to him and follow the trail to post them to the North Pole. Child £3 (normal admission charges apply).

So - if any of this appeals, why not take advantage of our Deranged December Discount (Are we mad?? Book for two nights and get the second night for only £25 up until 18th December).

Just give us a ring on 07920 053580 or visit our website and come on down...!

Tuesday 4 December 2012

A NIGHT AT THE CROW'S NEST FOR ONLY £25!

Do you long for 'a moment of calm' in the midst of all the Christmas Shopping Mayhem..? Then this is the place for you. Leave the battles of the high street stores behind and unwind - spend a stress-free couple of days strolling around Dartmouth's many individual shops and then allow yourself a cosy fireside treat in one of the friendly hotels or pubs before relaxing in one of our 'home from home' rooms. Does that sound tempting..??

Brown River Dart, Candlelit Dartmouth and more

Sorreeee......Well, this is rather embarrassing! I cannot believe that it has been many weeks since I last wrote but as it has stopped raining and there is a strange but very welcome light in the sky it seems to have galvanised me into action again. It's not as if it isn't worth visiting Dartmouth in winter - it most definitely is, but with less people around it is a different experience and just as relaxing and enjoyable but in a different way.

Boy, have we had some rain in the last week or so! It seemed relentless - was relentless in fact - and even though there is a cold wind today it was still lovely to wrap up warm and walk along the Embankment just now on the way to the shops. We decided to brave a walk to Dartmouth Castle on Sunday morning as it was only a bit drizzly, but only made it as far as the end of Swannaton Road before the heavens opened again and we had to turn tail and dash back home. Sadly it was a tad too early to shelter in the Dartmouth Arms and dry off - better luck next time...

We have never seen the River Dart look so brown - someone remarked that it looked like half of Dartmoor had washed down into it and I don't think they were far wrong... It is getting back to its usual attractive self now, however things are looking a bit battered and bruised around town - hardly surprising. We have been so, so lucky compared to a lot of places. How have you fared in your part of the world?

We're looking forward to the Candlelit Dartmouth festival this coming weekend and hope the dry weather will last. We are so lucky to live in Lower Street as we can sit in our window and watch the Candlelit Lantern Procession pass right below us - result! Especially if it's raining....

The Crow's Nest is full this weekend but we still have vacancies over the next few weekends if you fancy a bit of quality (and stress-free!) Christmas shopping.

If you're interested just give us a call on 07920 053580  or check out The Crow's Nest website and come on down!

Lovely birthday meal at Twentysix, Dartmouth

Just wanted to say a big thank you to Twentysix restaurant for the superb meal we enjoyed last week. Ironically, two of our guests had recommended it to us and as we hadn't had a chance to try it before now, we decided to do so to celebrate my birthday and we weren't disappointed.

To start I had the ballotine of ham and chicken and Alan had the goats' cheese and beetroot salad, the for our mains I had navarin of lamb and Alan tried the tartiflette, both of which were delicious. We were almost too full for a dessert but it all looked so tempting, so we decided to share a New York cheesecake and were very touched when it was served on a large plate with 'Happy Birthday' piped in chocolate.

The wine was very good and service excellent, so all in all a very enjoyable evening - so a big thank you to all the nice people at Twentysix, we'll be back...!

Dartmouth Regatta Grand Finale - Fantastic Fireworks and Terrific Tapas

We had a great end to a great Regatta last night - joined a bunch of friends for tapas at Bayards Cove Inn and then ran out on to South Embankment at 9pm to watch the firework display, which we thought was even more amazing than Thursday night and a brilliant finale. It was a full moon too which looked stunning over Kingswear, as an added bonus.

What's more, those nice people at Bayards Cove let us temporarily leave our table and trusted us to return and pay for our delicious tapas - which of course we did! Thank you BCI for another fab evening. xx

Nearly Regatta'd out..!

Hi - have been meaning to write for ages but have been well and truly Regatta'd - but it's been a good one. Despite a dodgy start on Wednesday night when it was cold and rainy and it seemed that not many brave souls were venturing out, the sun came out on Thursday and Friday and it looks set to be a good day today too.

There is a great buzz around town and lots of happy people enjoying the many different events still going on.

We are looking forward to a final stroll down the stalls this afternoon to buy some olives and sun dried tomatoes from the Mediterranean stall, and just soak up the atmosphere and enjoy the music on the Bandstand until it's time for the final firework display at 9.00pm, when I think we may retire early to recharge our batteries with a good book and nice mug of cocoa (and if you believe that, you'll believe anything...!)

It always amazes us that when we wake up on the Sunday after Regatta, it's almost as if it never happened. The streets are all clean and tidy again and the funfair and stalls have disappeared overnight - the Council street cleaners are fantastic and do a brilliant job - respect to them, we really do appreciate how they get our beloved town back to some form of normality in such a short space of time.

It does fall a bit flat after all the excitement but September is a usually a lovely month and the town still has a nice relaxing buzz to it - now all we need is the weather.

Watch this space....

twentysix in Dartmouth - what a find!

People MUST try new restaurant twentysix in Lower Street! This is what our lovely guests who stayed last night told us when they left this morning - they'd strolled for two minutes down the road from our door, discovered twentysix and had a fantastic meal there, and they just wanted me to let people know about it. So I am..!

We had some brilliant food there on the opening night and hear they may now have some special offers on - check out their website and give them a try.

We're sure you won't regret it. And no, Denise and Richard aren't paying me to say this - we just really like the place.

Bon Appetit...

People say the sweetest things - thank you!

Want to know one of the things we like best about running a guest house? It's got to be meeting a huge variety of nice people not just from the length and breadth of England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales but from all over the place. We've had guests from Australia, New Zealand, France, Germany, Switzerland, Russia, Spain, Italy, Norway, Sweden, Denmark - to name but a few.

Not only is it extremely interesting, but what really does our poor old hearts good on a grey rainy day when nothing seems to be going right is the compliments we get when they leave, or the lovely comments they write in our Visitors' Book, or the great reviews they give us on TripAdvisor

Call us old fashioned, but it still gives us a little warm glow to know that our guests like what we're doing! Thank you kind people - we really appreciate it.

Agatha Christie's house at Greenway, near Dartmouth

Agatha Christie

If you've never visited Agatha Christie's house at Greenway, just five miles up the river from Dartmouth, you're in for a treat. As well as the famous author's beautifully refurbished home you can stroll around the gardens and enjoy spectacular views all down the river Dart, and round it all off with a nice cuppa tea and a sit down (or much more, if the fancy takes you...).

Greenway House

You can make a day of it by taking a leisurely half hour river trip either on the Greenway Ferry, which goes from the Dartmouth Pontoon and stops right on Greenway Quay, or the Dittisham Ferry from Dartmouth Embankment, which stops at Dittisham on the opposite bank to Greenway. If you take the Dittisham option you'll need to ring a bell outside the pub on the quay to summon the small ferry from the other side, which only takes a few minutes.

The food at Greenway is lovely, with the choice of the Barn Gallery Cafe, House Kitchen or Greenway Dining Room (see website link for full details) but if you wanted to have lunch at Dittisham we can recommend the Ferry Boat Inn and the Anchorstone Cafe on the quay - spoilt for choice, really!

And the good news is, both the Greenway Ferry and the Dittisham Ferry are less than five minute's walk from The Crow's Nest's front door - so you can have a relaxing night's sleep, take a leisurely breakfast, stroll along to buy your ferry tickets and start relaxing right away.

So - can we tempt you to stay at
The Crow's Nest...? Just give us a call.
